Day 209 ~ Most of a Monday

July 28, 2014

My Instead: I went grass sledding with two of my grandchildren, Abbey and Andy.

Mondays can be a drag, right? Have ya felt that way before? Guilty here. But then I go and speak out of the other side of my mouth, “Hey, it’s 1/7 of your life, just like any other day and just as important. So live it!” But getting that calendar out of your head and living the moment is an enormous undertaking. Oh, I’m sorry. Did I say “your” head? I meant mine. But I’m not the only one challenged by this, right?

On this particular Monday morning, my tires hit the pavement at 8:15. I’m off to work my only job of the day. The afternoon, I planned, would be spent catching up on my blogs, preferably out on my deck, making the most of a Monday. So much for that. Enter daughter-in-law and two grandchildren. Seize the moment, Mary…because it will never pass this way again. We sat out on my deck soaking the sun, spewing forth our customary conversation, and delighting in whatever the kids were about to do next.

And what came next was indeed a delight! The four of us followed the flight of the Frisbee and found ourselves in my backyard below the deck. After playing for a bit, Andy was curious about what was in my shed. We found a two-wheeler with training wheels. He couldn’t quite master that, especially in the grass. Abbey, however, found the all-too-familiar green saucer sled. Shaundra and I continued our banter until I turned around and found Abbey and Andy sitting in the sled atop the hill ready to slide down. “Grandma, push us!” Seriously? I grabbed hold of the sled and raced down with a saucer full of laughter and screams! “Again, again!” And that’s what we did, again and again. It was almost like a winter’s day, almost.

During one of our trudges back up the hill, I asked Abbey which she liked best, snow sledding or grass sledding. Without hesitation, she blurted “grass!” I had to know why. “It’s faster, Grandma!”

Did I mention why I’m doing what I’m doing this year? Yes, I did…to have more joy in my life.
