My Instead: I fed crawdads to fish, I split wood with a powered log splitter, and I fished from a johnboat.
It was Sunday and also our
only full day to be with Annette’s parents at their beautiful place in the
country. Her dad feeds crawdads to the fish in his pond every morning and we
were the invited guests on the dock for the crawdad toss. I anticipated
being just a spectator, but those crawdads were calling my name.
After admitting that I had never held one before, I decided to end that stint
and finally get acquainted with these little buggers. Annette’s dad gingerly
handed me one, assuring me that the “little lobster” would not attack me. I
tossed it in and watched as the fish below enjoyed their breakfast. Her dad
handed me one after another as I tossed the creatures into their final resting
place. We continued to toss crawdads, then dog food and lastly some pieces of bread.
Those fish got a 3-course breakfast. Then it was time for our
breakfast. The four of us went inside and her mom prepared us eggs, sausage, and biscuits and gravy.
When we finished our meal, Annette’s dad had another treat in store for us. Earlier in the year, he purchased a gas-powered log splitter...and he had a pile of logs waiting to be split. Annette and her dad started the splitting
to show me the ropes…looked simple enough. I put on my work gloves, listened to
some pertinent safety tips, and then got busy. I was in my
element…seventh heaven…happy as a clam. The only negative here was that we ran out of logs to
split. He promised he’d have more by our next visit.
To cap
off this near perfect day, Annette suggested that we go take the johnboat
out and catch some of the fish that we had fattened up earlier at breakfast. Having
never fished off a boat before, I jumped at the offer. Annette is a veteran
fisherwoman and I was her eager student. We caught so many fish that afternoon,
I lost count. After posing with us for pictures, the fish were happy to dive
back into the lake. The day was perfect,
the company was the best and the fish were biting. And I thought the log
splitting was heaven!
When
you least expect it, life can be so good…all you have to do is live in the
moment.
