My Instead: I took my mom to my granddaughter's
Christmas program at her school.
This morning when I arrived at my
daughter-in-law’s house to watch my grandson Andy, Shaundra informed me that my
granddaughter’s Christmas program was tonight and not this coming Friday. She
thought I might have other plans, but my calendar held a blank spot…and
now it was filled with Abbey.
I usually fly solo when I go to these types of
programs, but today I decided “instead” to invite my mother to join me. Mom
jumped on the “yes” band wagon right away, since she was already dolled up to
go to a card party at St. Luke’s parish center during the day. Later, I picked
her up at 6:30 and we were on the road to Smithton to arrive at Abbey’s school
well before 7 o’clock.
Abbey marched in with her first grade class, as
pretty as a princess in her new red dress and little black cape. She was also
decked out in shoes that looked like Dorothy’s ruby slippers. Abbey, along with
her classmates, sang all the old favorites: Joy to the World, Jingle Bells,
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, The Twelve Days of Christmas and We Wish You a
Merry Christmas. Abbey sang along and performed all the little gestures that
made the songs more fun for the kids.
Each time I would sneak a peek over at my mom, she
had a look of real joy and pride. I asked her what she liked about the program
and she said that Abbey and all the kids were just so cute. Then I asked her
what she was thinking as she watched Abbey and she said she thought of me when
I was a skinny little thing at that age. I reminded her that I was never that
skinny. We laughed.
After the kids were finished, Abbey joined all
her spectators and received kudos for her performance. She was tickled to see
us all there. She even went up to the bleachers to show us that she knew exactly
where we all were sitting to watch her. We were embraced in mutual admiration…she
for us and we for her. It was how it SHOULD be…from 6 to 86.
(And to my one avid reader, Annie...I hope you don't think my "insteads" involving my mother are getting a bit repetitive or boring. Mom and I are experiencing new things and new feelings. And the blessings are abundant, not redundant. Love you and appreciate your interest and your input always.)
