My Instead: I went to the Garden Glow at the
Missouri Botanical Gardens.
My twin brother Mark and his wife Linda asked if
Mom, Annette, and I would like to meet them at the Missouri Botanical Gardens
to walk through its Garden Glow display. Then afterwards we could all go to the
Fox Theater to see “A Christmas Carol”. Although this is a very busy time for
me, I said yes! I’m figuring out at the age of 62 that the Christmas season
doesn’t have to be all about work and preparation.
We decided to meet at the Gardens at 5:30.
Annette was driving directly from Farmington, Mom and I were coming from
Belleville, and Mark and Linda from O’Fallon, Missouri...a veritable Botanical
Triangle. Once we all arrived, we began our trek through the lighted Garden
Glow. Like a fabulous vacation site, it was a challenge taking it all in.
Annette and I wanted to linger at the different illumined attractions, but our
time was limited because of our next social engagement at the Fox.
One particular station hosted a kissing mistletoe
under which to stand and kiss your sweetheart. Nope, no can do...but we both
sure wanted to. When you are not in the mainstream of what society dictates, you
just have to accept it and move on…and we did. Sorry to say, we didn't hold hands either.
And yes, some of “our kind” would never be intimidated by the outside world like this, but Annette and I are not “some”
of them. But our relationship is still real and blessed…to us.
When we reached the end of our beginning at the
Garden Glow, we turned around to take it in one last time. The beauty of the
gardens, the beauty of the season, and the beauty of us made it magical.
