My Instead: Annette and I went to our first
holiday dance as a couple.
‘Tis the season! There was a holiday dance this
evening and Annette and I were on board to attend our first one since being
together. She arrived at my house around 1:30 and we spent the next three hours
making our final choices on what to wear, ironing, and dolling up. I have
become Annette’s official make-over doer. In between applying my own make-up
and coiffuring my own hair, I was performing the same task on Annette. She
appreciates my expertise and my effort…and she likes being pretty. I always call her “striking”!
After meeting some friends for dinner at Syberg’s
on Gravois in St. Louis, we took a five minute drive to the dance hall in Affton.
Annette and I found our table, discarded our coats and began visiting with
friends…she on one end of the hall and I on the other. I kept glancing over at
her to see her “in action”. It was not a jealousy thing, by any means. It was
more like comfort, knowing I had my girl there with me…for the first time. Until now, I’ve
ALWAYS gone solo to this holiday event.
Annette and I finally made it to the dance floor
together, either to hold each other or to "kick it around"…whatever the DJ
determined. She asked me how I felt about being there “with” somebody. I said
it was different but good. It seemed as if couples all around us were breaking up, but we were
hanging in there with over four months behind us…gotta start somewhere! Admittedly,
four months is good for me...I’m usually a “four-week” kind of gal.
The music played on as we danced our hearts,
knees and feet away. The DJ was heavy on the slow dances and I don’t think we
missed a one unless we were downstairs. Annette said she would have normally complained
in the past about not enough fast dances, but not tonight. We enjoyed our
friends and each other until silence prevailed once more. We headed back to my
house, hoping that leg cramps would not plague us throughout the night.
We lucked out!
