My instead: I did a test drive in a car (Ford Fusion) that I had no intention of
buying.
Spring
is such a good time to take those long evening drives…so why not do it in a
brand new, fully loaded car! No, I am not being unfaithful to my 15-year-old
Honda CRV that I have had since “birth”. My 100th day of "insteads” deserved
a little pizazz, so what better way than pretending to be a wealthy “car person”,
neither of which I am.
My friend Kelly, being the Ralph Nader of cars, offered to go along with me to Mertz Ford
in Millstadt, IL. I know, I know. You’re thinking “you’re living the dream in a
Ford”? Baby steps. Jimmy, the salesman, was great about getting me the keys to
the brand new red Ford Fusion with leather seats and all the bells and whistles.
I even let him in on why I wanted to do this test drive and he still had no
apprehensions, at least none that he expressed to me.
I got
behind the wheel and made all the adjustments to the seat until I was fitted
perfectly for the journey ahead. I
asked Jimmy if we could go on the highway to get the feel of how much power
that baby had. I could hardly feel the road beneath…smooth. The sun roof needed
to be checked out…to see if it worked, of course. And for one millisecond, I thought
of asking Kelly to drive so I could do the “through the roof” ride, but I “cancel/cleared”
that notion. I don’t know why exactly. Yes, I’ve already done that, but “seconds”
can be just as good as “firsts”…maybe even better. I’ve heard the quote “When
in doubt, cut it out”. How about this one: “when entranced, go for the dance”!
I got a taste of the “good
life” during that test drive. But as my life unfolds each day during this year
of “insteads”, the “good life” is MY life and there’s much more there than just a
taste.
