Day 98 ~ Too Cool for School
Apr 8,
2014
My
first: I introduced my 2-year-old grandson Andy to his first day of college.
Going to
the wrong campus for a class a couple of Saturdays ago was not pretty, so I was
bound and determined to know where I was supposed to be for the class I was taking
this coming Saturday. I had my grandson Andy with me for the day, so it’s never
too early for him to “start college”, right?
That
morning I picked up three of my grandkids from their home and dropped two of
them off at their respective schools. Abbey is in kindergarten at St. James and
Isaac is a sophomore at Belleville West High School. But Andy is too cool for
school and had to stick with Grandma.
With just
Andy and me in the car, we made our way to SWIC (Southwestern Illinois College)
to locate classroom #1380, the place where my “Planning Retirement” 2-hour
course would be held on Saturday. We found the room right off the bat; now it
was time to explore. The stairs were the most enticing. Thus, that is why they
call it “higher education”…don’t you know! I think we would still be there if
it weren’t for my promises to go outside, take a walk and play with his
lawnmower.
When we
finally exited the building, we found some “big boy” baseball players that we
watched for a while and, of course, the bleachers could not go unexplored. Andy
was also in charge of mowing the campus grounds. Our morning consisted almost
entirely of Andy’s finding out what college is all about. My eyes were learning
to see and explore all over again. Observing Andy search, examine, and experience
the simple things was like making new footprints in freshly ebbed sand. It’s
all been done before and it will be done again…but there is nothing like the first
time.
