My instead: I went to a
patriotic cabaret at Hamburger Mary's and sang along.
I had met Kristen Goodman
the night before at a patio entertainment event in St. Louis. She shared with a
group of us that she would be performing in a patriotic cabaret at Hamburger
Mary’s upper lounge on Thursday night, the day before Independence Day. Some of
the girls in the group had already heard Kristen perform, so there were oodles
of kudos filling the night air.
The next night arrived
on time and I was off to St. Louis to enjoy an “America the Beautiful” cabaret.
The lounge was intimate but FREEZING…and since we had a quite a few of us in
our group, huddling seemed like a good idea at the time…ahhhh, warmth.
Kristen and her pianist
Ron began the show with the “Star-Spangled Banner”… appropriate and beautifully
performed. The two of them continued to wow us “loungers” with their amazing skills.
Some other performers were introduced to show off their budding talents as
well.
During the cabaret, I
had urged my friends to join me in singing a patriotic song. No one took the
bait. Fortunately, Kristen had arranged a sing-along for everyone in the crowd,
so my wish was somewhat granted. I was in my element. I even talked to Kristen about
performing at next month’s cabaret named “Hot, Hot, Hot Summer”. Could I
perform Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff”? I used to lip sync this song when I was
Perky Nipples (my “frustrated stripper” character that I did for private
parties over 10 years ago). She told me what I needed to do…get the music on
line for the piano player and come to a couple of rehearsals. Not sure if I’m
ready for this. I am no Patsy Cline when it comes to singing. To be pondered.
The entertainers and our
table of friends were a classic combo to culminate an exquisite evening. The
cabaret concluded and most of the loungers left. Our group stayed however. The
evening continued outside on the lounge’s deck. It was cool and breezy for a
July night…waiting to be enjoyed. And we did.
One of the gals in our
group had done the male version of a drag show act. Could I do this? I talked
to another friend and she said she would try it. Doing this does NOT mean
that the woman performing wants to be a man. It’s just a performance…an
experience. I’ll do THIS.
My conclusion about this
evening and after doing new things for over 6 months is that I am NOT into being
the audience…I want to be a part of the show. Anybody can observe, but only a
select few can take the stage. Pick me!
