My instead: My
neighbor/friend invited me over to visit with longtime friends.
As is usually the case
during a holiday weekend, I had plans for Saturday evening. I was to meet
friends at a pub out in West St. Louis to hear, Chic, one of our favorite
artists. She used to live in the area, but has resided in Florida for many
years. She was attracting a lot of her old loyal fans during her stint here in
St. Louis. I was one of them.
However, around 4:00 in
the afternoon, my friend/neighbor, Mary, called and asked if I could join her
and her husband, Jim, and two other friends, Barb and Tom, for a drink. She
missed me. Wow, it’s been over 20 years since I partied with all these guys. “Switching
lanes” in my late 30s was not conducive to keeping my straight friends, or at
least hanging out with them...kind of like having leprosy. Time…the wonder
healer.
At the time Mary called,
I was involved in a hot game of Chutes and Ladders with my granddaughter, Abbey.
I didn’t know if I would have time to visit Mary and the gang and then be able
to get over to St. Louis to listen to Chic. Nevertheless, this invitation was a
long time in coming and I was NOT going to make this reunion wait any longer.
I arrived in the early
evening and was greeted with such warmth…all that was missing was the red
carpet. Of course, they were several beers in by the time I got there! It felt
wonderful. The conversations were open, enlightening, interesting and fun. I
even stayed for dinner. The intended 45 minutes turned into 2 ½ hours. We
were just five people enjoying one another and time spent.
The past 20 years didn’t
just bide its time by adding wrinkles and grey hair…
