My Instead: I perched myself on the roof of my house in the evening looking over the street where I live.
Thursdays tend to be
busier for me than the other days of the week, perhaps because the weekend is
rearing its pretty head and I’m working to make everyone happy before the end of the week unveiling. However, on this particular Thursday, I had a meeting regarding retirement
matters, so I had to free my afternoon for that.
When I returned home
from my financial appointment in Edwardsville, I was able to complete some of my own
chores while looking forward to where I would be spending the rest of my
evening. Tonight (via my 6-foot ladder) I would establish residence on the roof of my home. A couple of weeks prior, I had “camped out” on the roof of my all-seasons
room; but that was just outside my bedroom window.
Since I moved in November of 1991, I had positioned myself atop
my shingles many times...usually on a holiday
mission of hanging my Christmas lights. I had never just hung out on my “upper
level” without this or some other ulterior motive. But where is it written that Mary always
has to pursue a purpose to perch above the street where she lives? I wanted to
watch the world go by without the world watching me.
These liberating moments,
I imagine, are much like the freedom you would feel if you could fly…but the
ticket is priceless.
