My Instead: I "sat" in Lake Springfield at my brother's place.
The baptism of my great
nephew Archer went off without a hitch, with me as the token photographer.
Sometimes I just take over and don’t even ask if picture taking is desired. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do! As
it turned out though, Archer’s mom, my niece Sarah, enjoyed and appreciated the
photos I emailed her later that week.
Afterwards we were all invited to my
brother Dale’s house on Lake Springfield for a light lunch. When the meal was over and the opening of gifts was completed for this little boy, Dale asked if anyone wanted to go for a boat ride. There were
six of us that took him up on his offer. He gave a relaxing tour of the entire
lake, driving us from one end to the other…a warm breeze following us the whole
time. My dad’s “famous” quote came to mind, “I wonder what the rich people are
doing today.”
When we got back to
shore, Dale, being the consummate host that he is, asked if anyone wanted to “go jump in a
lake”. My first inclination was to say no…but that was the old Mary (she sticks
around to spoil the fun once in a while). A second later, my girlfriend Annette
and I were rushing to change into lake-proof attire and do just what my
brother suggested…we jumped into the lake! Dale had these amazing water saddles
that made almost any size person buoyant and that’s where we sat ourselves for
over an hour. What I absolutely loved about this type of lounging was being held
“captive” with no distractions. We “sat” there and talked with Dale the whole
time about whatever any of us could conjure up. The time spent was informal and
intimate…that’s my thing!
The irony of being restricted,
yet feeling so liberated was a surprise to me. When I recall this “while away”
moment, I am so thankful that it did not escape me!
