My Instead: I played one-on-one basketball with my grandson Tyler before school at 6 o’clock in the morning.
When my grandson Tyler
and I got home from an evening of painting and perfecting our Parkour skills at
my son’s house, he wanted to play some basketball in my driveway. Seriously? It
was late, we hadn’t eaten yet, I was spent, and it was a school night! The
answer was no, with a promise that we could do it in the morning before we left
my house to meet the bus. Surely, he would forget.
“Grandma, we have to
play basketball” were the first words Tyler uttered in the morning. We have
played lots of basketball in my driveway, but never at 6 o’clock in the
morning! As my mother would say “What will the neighbors think?” But a promise
is a promise and the neighbors could just watch if they wanted.
I thought we would play
horse or pig…you know, the game where you make a shot and the next person has
to make the same shot, otherwise, they get a letter. Nope, Tyler wanted to play
one-on-one. I was already feeling some unfamiliar aches and pains from our dirt
pile adventure the night before. Well, maybe this would help me work out some
kinks that would otherwise settle in to stay for a while, I thought.
Even better than coffee,
shooting hoops in the morning can really be an eye opener…or maybe it was spending
cherished moments with someone you love, rather than just rushing out the door.
