My
instead: I helped with the taking of my ex-husband's blended family portrait by amusing
my 2-year-old grandson.
Since
my son Todd and his wife Kyra were in town to go on a summer vacation with my
ex-husband’s (Gary) blended family, we decided to take this opportunity to have
family pictures taken. The venue was to be at Gary’s place. It was beautiful there
and was most likely a photographer’s paradise with all the possible settings
from which to choose.
My
daughter-in-law Shaundra and I planned all the different groupings to be
photographed so the schedule was pretty tight. We started around 9:30 in the
morning and wrapped it up around noon. The last picture to be taken was of Gary
and Phyllis’ blended family. I could have left because my photos had all been
taken. Also, I had brought my mom along to visit with Todd and everyone. Unfortunately
by this time, she was ready to leave as well. She had things to do to get ready
for a visit to my brother’s house in O’Fallon, Missouri later that day.
As "luck" would have it, my
2-year-old grandson Andy was reaching the end of his rope, as was his mother. I
anticipated that this last photo, with so many people, would be the final challenge.
I decided to stick around.
Everyone was perched somewhere by Gary’s old red
truck, but we weren't quite sure where Andy’s place would be. He was not a
happy camper and his funny bone could not be found. I was on all fours trying
to get that boy to settle down and smile. It didn't work. Finally, I retrieved his bag of
puff snacks, gave him a few more, and then proceeded to throw them into the air, one
right after another, TRYING to catch them in my mouth…to no avail. But that didn't matter! There was Andy, finally smiling and laughing at Grandma’s
silliness. The photographer was clicking away while Andy’s face was lit up. It
was glorious.
And
that’s a wrap! And a good thing too because I was out of puff snacks…
