My instead: I weed whacked
my sister’s yard for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure!
My sister Karen had all
the right intentions to register and participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for
the Cure. Unfortunately, after she paid the $120 for her and 3 others to walk
in the event, she remembered that her son Connor had his last baseball game the
morning of the race. By the way, his team is undefeated. Now what?
I contacted my daughter
Robin to tell her that Karen had registered and paid to do the Race for the
Cure, but she was unable to attend. If Robin would like to, she and her son
Tyler could walk in Karen’s place and would not have to dip into her budgeted
funds. She quickly agreed to do the race! I was elated that she and Tyler would
be joining me. Robin admitted that she had felt guilty about not going because
of the cost.
There was a catch to the
whole deal though. My sister said that she would give Robin the two tickets if
I would weed whack her entire yard. Okay! I managed to carve out some time the
next evening and ran over to her house to do the deed. All the while I was
whacking and being splattered with blades of grass, I felt great knowing that
this too was for the cause of curing breast cancer. It lent a whole different
perspective to the task at hand.
A storm was brewing as I
was reaching the end of my errand and I imagined myself being struck by
lightning while whacking away. What a way to go! I was pretty close to being
soaked when I finally finished. I took a quick photo, put the weed eater in my
car, hopped into the driver’s seat, and headed home. Made it!
I loved the feeling coming
from this kind of “instead”. Robin and Tyler were able to join me for the race,
Karen was happy about her yard, and I paid the price with my labor of love! Not
a bad deal…
