My instead: I registered
for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure for breast cancer.
I have always gotten
emotional while watching the videos on television from the Susan G. Komen Race
for the Cure for breast cancer. Well, time to bite the bullet. Sign up! There
was a blitz registration opportunity at the St. Clair mall in Fairview Heights.
After work that day, I made a run to the mall to commit to this mighty cause.
On the way to the
registration site, I talked to my sister Karen and urged her to join me for the
race. She enthusiastically agreed to the commitment and signed up to enter the
event along with her son Connor and her sister-in-law and her son. I was
elated! My daughter wanted to join me along with her son Tyler, but the cost
was not within her budget. She was disappointed as was I. I implored a very good
friend of mine to be at my side for the race, but it was a no go. Very
disappointed. I truly believed and urged him to go, saying that the energy of
that experience would have been such a boost for his spirit. Again, no go. Lead
a horse to water…
As I sat down at the
enrollment table, my heart was heavy and my mood was not aligned with the magic
of the moment. I reached within and mustered all the reasons for my being there…my
friend Barb currently fighting the fight, my Aunt Carol who has survived for
years, my ex-coworker Shirley who lost the battle 40 years ago, and me, thankful
to have “no features of cancer” from my recent mammogram.
Done! I was issued my 3X
T-shirt (all they had left) and my race number. I reminded myself that this was
my year to do something “instead” to have more joy in MY life. Others may hear
my stories, read my blogs, and possibly join me in the act, but the joy generated
is my challenge, my choice.
