My instead: My grandson and I raced up a huge rock pile.
I had my grandson Tyler for the evening so he HAD to participate in my “instead”. He didn’t mind at all because he knows Grandma will come up with something that is fun for him!
After an accident with a basketball and a camera in front of his house, Tyler and I (with the beginnings of a black eye) headed for the forbidden rock piles. I found these two huge rock piles (in a mixture of dried tar, I think) on private property off Mine Haul Road. (I love this stretch of country road.) They were calling to me. Tyler’s always ready to climb a rock pile, a tree, whatever…he’s an 11-yeard-old boy!
When we got there, I got the camera ready to document the event. Tyler climbed up first and I got a few shots of him on top. My turn! I made it to the top…no problem! Tyler was the cameraman for these shots. Then he suggested that we have a RACE up the hill. Seriously? Does he remember that I am weeks away from Social Security age? Oh, well. I put the timer on the camera, then it was “ready, set, go”. I beat him! He beat me to the bottom of the pile, but I smoked him going up the hill. He was struggling from the rocks sliding under his feet. I think he was laughing too hard. We did about 7 or 8 races altogether and he eventually got the hang of it. He was proud to beat me…when he finally wore me out!
We enjoyed being at the top, looking around and talking about whatever came to mind. I asked which part he liked the best and, of course, it was the races. The part I liked best is the time shared with my grandson. I just hope he remembers our time together and the simple fun we had.
