My
instead: I presented a little girl with a 6-petal rainbow pinwheel wishing her a
happy Mother’s Day.
My
friend Steve did a wonderful thing to a woman standing in line behind him at the
grocery store. He was purchasing two bouquets, one for his mother and one he
intended to give to a random mother for Mother’s Day. A woman stood behind him
in line and he wished her a happy Mother’s Day. Her reply
was “Thanks, but everyone bailed on me for tomorrow”. He presented her with the extra bouquet and
repeated his wish for her. She cried in his arms as they hugged. His last words to her were “Not everyone
bails” and he gave her a wink and a smile! I was
in tears and so proud of my friend’s kind heart.
So now I had to come
up with my “instead” for the day. I wasn’t going to use Steve’s idea even though
it was wonderful. I decided to go the other route and present a little gift to a
young girl who may someday have the honor and blessing of becoming a mother. I
saw a mother and her young daughter (8 years-old maybe) in the dollar store as
I was buying mother’s day cards for my mom, daughter and daughter-in-law. I
paid for my items and waited in my car for them to come out.
As they exited I
walked up to them with this rainbow pinwheel in hand and asked the mother if
this was her daughter and could I talk to her. She said yes right away. I
squatted down and gave the little girl the pinwheel. Her “thank you” was
immediate…very polite. I explained that she might be a mommy someday and I bet
she will be a great one just like her mommy. I asked for a hug and got one from each of
them. The mom wished me happy Mother’s Day and I did the same to her. What a
moment for the three of us! I was so happy, moved, and even somewhat nervous.
But it was worth it. I hope the little girl remembers my wish and my confidence
in her when God blesses her with a child of her own.
