My Instead: My girlfriend Annette and I attended a lesbian wedding reception.
Annette and I had a busy
Saturday…she had to work and I had to go to the holiday boutique to gather up
all my photos from my display. We were both running in all directions to make
it on time to her friends’ wedding reception. Unfortunately, we could not make
it to the actual wedding ceremony held earlier in the afternoon. I would
have loved to have attended a lesbian wedding in a catholic church. I heard it
was beautiful.
When Annette finally arrived
at my house, I added the finishing touches to her make-up and hair. Yes, she likes
me to make her look nice for special occasions. We made it out the door right
around the time we thought we would and got on the road to St. Louis. The
evening was chilly, but absolutely beautiful. The marque welcomed us with its
congratulatory wishes to Jayne and Wendy. I couldn't believe I had lived long
enough to see these words on a marque and to attend a wedding reception
celebrating the marriage of two women.
We stepped inside the banquet
hall and saw the beaming smile of Beth, our friend. She explained to us what we
needed to do to find our assigned seats. There were so many activities to do…all
with a Harry Potter theme. Somebody did a lot of work here and I later found
out it was one of the brides, Wendy. She is one creative and energetic lady.
We sat with familiar
friends and faces and enjoyed an evening of food, drink, and dancing…just like
any other wedding reception. But this time the two people that were wed were
both women. The event didn’t seem that different until I sat back and thought
about how far the gay lifestyle has come in our society.
But then my wandering
brain pondered about where this lifestyle will go from here. In the last decade, there had been some amazing strides. Will it blossom
even more and truly become part of the mainstream? I can’t even imagine what is to come. I just
hope that we are always considered a respectable part of society as we continue
to jump the hurdles that lay before us.
