My Instead: I took a photo of a rusty old gas pump to the blood bank, then they rejected me from donating.
It’s been 8 weeks since
I gave blood...time to donate again! Why does time seem to go so fast, now
that my wrinkles are coming out at full throttle? Anyway, this time I decided
that my rusty old body would go to the blood bank with a gift photo of a rusty old gas pump. What better gift for a blood
bank that pumps blood out of people than a gas pump!
I arrived at the Red Cross blood bank and the only attendant there that I
knew was Valerie. She knows my silly ways; therefore, I felt totally
comfortable presenting the photo to her for the blood bank. She thought it was
a cute picture and that it was very nice of me to give it. After all, no one ever brings a
gift to the blood bank except for their blood…that should be enough, right?
Valerie took me into one
of the back rooms to do the evaluation to see if I was eligible to donate. I
wasn’t! After not one, but two punctures, my iron was still .3 points too low to
donate. She also commented that my heart skips a total of nine beats per minute…one
fewer than the minimum number allowed before they reject you. This was not a
good day for me to give…good thing I didn't come empty-handed!
I began to feel
like there was more of a resemblance between me and that old rusty gas pump
than I had originally thought. Valerie loaded me up on raisins to eat before I donate the
next time…they will boost the iron in my blood. Steak and red wine does that
too, but she was fresh out!
When I got home, Annette
came all the way up from Farmington to be with me. I explained to her what
happened and her main concern was my heart skipping beats. "I’ll check it out
one of these days, but in the meantime, let’s have a bonfire in the backyard." We enjoyed hot dogs and s’mores and our fireside chat on a beautiful, clear, and chilly evening. Being only three months
into our relationship, we still have a lot to discuss about dreams, values, plans,
and marshmallows.
