My Instead: I attended my grandsons Tyler and Danny's first basketball game in 6th grade, then on to my nephew Connor's last baseball game.
After a morning of
cleaning and an afternoon of yard work, I was ready for a quiet evening and a date
with my couch. Unfortunately, my couch got stood up…by me. I had places to go
and people to see. My grandson Tyler and my newly-acquired grandson Danny had
their first 6th grade basketball game and I had to be there! I arrived
at the gym about mid-game and joined my daughter Robin on the bleachers.
The game was very
exciting because the teams were pretty evenly matched. Tyler and Danny were put
into the game periodically and they even got to touch the ball once or twice!
Robin and I were excited about the close score, even though we both realized its
ultimate insignificance in life. The game ended in victory in double overtime.
After the boys had their post-game talk with their coach, they joined us to
receive their congratulatory hugs.
My next stop was on the
other side of the world in O’Fallon, Illinois where my nephew Connor was
playing in his last baseball game of the season. It was a chilly night for
America’s favorite pastime that was better enjoyed with blankets and a hot
chocolate. I got to witness Connor fielding a ball in the outfield and also
getting a hit. Aidan, his brother, was on the other side of the fence enjoying
the company of other kids while nursing a fresh knot on his noggin.
The game ended about twenty
minutes after my arrival, but Connor was happy that I showed up to observe his
stardom in the making. We all packed up our chairs and blankets and walked to
our cars, saying good-bye to another baseball season as it bit the dust.
I got home before 9 o’clock and was able to have a late date with my couch after all. The peace that settled in around me felt better than usual because my scale was tipping with love of family and the joy of knowing that I belong.
