My Instead: I called my friend Kelly after a 4-month estrangement and invited her to have dinner.
Edwardsville, Illinois
was where I would be heading later in the afternoon for a final meeting with my
financial guy to sign papers to move some IRA money into a fixed annuity. Enter wild
hair. Time to dig in and bury a hatchet. Edwardsville is close to the stomping grounds of my ex-BFF, Kelly. It had
been over 4 months since we became estranged (again) over something silly.
I called her and left a message,
suggesting we meet for dinner since I would be in her area. Yeah! She called me
up and accepted.
Our arrival at
Cleveland-Heath in Edwardsville was in sync. After being seated, we ordered our
drinks. I reminded her that this meal was my treat. We ended up ordering same entry,
a BBQ'd pulled pork sandwich on a delicious pretzel bun with slaw and fries.
Then, of course, we caught up on the usual superficial information, which somehow
softened the rigor mortis of our friendship’s recent demise.
Our dinner talk evolved
into an exchange of perceptions about our friendship. We enlightened each other
with its varying versions...and felt the bridge being slowing rebuilt. We feasted
on mutual forgiveness for our dessert.
We discovered that the vehicle
of our friendship, pummeled with slanderous stones from the past, still runs. The
road ahead is unmapped, but I will to do my part to dodge the potholes and keep
this thing moving in the right direction.
