My Instead: I went to my new grandson Danny's soccer game to celebrate his 12th birthday.
Since my daughter Robin attained legal guardianship of Danny, he has been a blessed part of our family. I, as his newly-assigned grandmother, have included him in many of the activities I plan with my grandkids. And today was Danny’s 12 birthday and I had to be there.
When Annette and I got
up, I made us a nice breakfast and then began writing a few blogs. She was
going to piddle around the house, but then began to feel sick with a bad headache and all that goes with it. I advised her
to go to bed and stay there until she felt better. A few hours of blogging
ensued on my end while Annette slept.
Our beautiful day was
dwindling away when I looked at the clock and saw the hour of Danny’s soccer
game staring me in the face. We had to make it to the game to see Danny play on
his birthday. I went to check on
Annette to see if she was still among the living. She was. And she was feeling
better. Time to go then. We made ourselves presentable and raced out the door.
The soccer fields were a hop, a skip and a jump from my house so we were there in
a blink. We found Danny’s game when we noticed this goalie with a very familiar
posture. It was Danny.
Robin and Tyler were
watching the game, along with some of Danny’s biological family. His uncle, who
is local, was there. His mother, with whom Danny has no relationship, and his
aunt were there. They were visiting from California to help their brother move into
his new place. Meeting the woman who gave up the privilege of being Danny’s mom
was not so much a pleasure, but more like a child
tasting those yucky peas for the first time. But I smiled and lied, saying “nice
to finally meet you”.
When the game was over,
Danny joined all his spectators as the honorable birthday boy. He was happy to see us all
there on his special day, as we snapped photos of him with his "other" family. When we walked back to our cars, I handed Danny his "Happy Birthday, Grandson"
card with his monetary gift inside. He was appreciative as he posed for some
commemorative photos with his new family, the ones who will love and nurture
Danny…as he should be.
