My Instead: I had my grandchildren Tyler and Abbey, with Danny, stay overnight for pizza and games.
My daughter Robin had
asked me way in advance if I would have the boys overnight on Friday. She and
her husband Ross had plans to go to a concert at Pop’s in Sauget, Illinois.
Admittedly, I don’t prefer my daughter hanging out at this venue, but she had
been wanting to see this group, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony her whole life of 31
years. How can a mother say no to that!
I decided to ask my
daughter-in-law Shaundra if she thought my granddaughter Abbey would like to
join me and the boys for the festivities. She said absolutely! I picked up
Abbey that night and the first thing on the agenda was attending the boys’
basketball game. With popcorn and Gatorade in hand, we found our spot on the
bleachers and watched as Tyler and Danny played small portions of the game.
They’re not in the first string, but they don’t seem to mind. Seeing them out
there moving and having fun, as opposed to the “zombie-ness” of playing those mindless
video games, was beautiful to me.
After an interesting
trip to the grocery store following the game, we were en route to my house for
pizza night. I planned on having a fun night of interactive games with the
kids! So much for Grandma’s plans. While cleaning up the pizza mess, Tyler got
the Monopoly game out and that was all she wrote. I hate Monopoly! Okay, maybe
not hate, but I just don’t see the point. Abbey loves a challenge, so she was
all about Tyler and Danny showing her the ins and outs of the game. Not being
under the influence of “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em”, I opted to finish up
a blog in the kitchen.
After a time, the
Monopoly game lost its luster. Danny was ready to crash on the couch, but Tyler
and Abbey were on to the next thing. They finally decided to play one of Grandma’s
“interactive” games, Pick-Up Sticks. Yeah! Unfortunately, I was still in the
groove of blog writing. I eventually joined them for the last part of their
game which had become quite lax about the rules. That’s okay, though. By that
time, I was just happy to “be” with them. My agenda had become insignificant.
“Cousin night” has
changed a bit for us. Now Danny makes three. Another déjà vu moment in the
making! Having two boys and one girl seems all too familiar. I guess these Todd,
Kyle and Robin impersonators will have to do. And they’re doing just fine.
