My Instead: I took my grandsons Tyler and Danny with me to my sister’s house to play with their cousins while I worked…AND played a little with them on the side.
My sister Karen hires me now and
again to do jobs that she either does not know how to do or simply does not want
to do. Two days earlier, I had started cleaning up her landscaping and today my
plan was to finish this job once and for all. She had wanted this chore done
for the last couple of months, but my calendar had always been brimming with
other jobs.
The night before, I asked Karen if I
could bring my grandsons Tyler and Danny along so that they could play with
their cousins (her sons) Connor and Aidan. She agreed. While driving to Karen’s
house, I issued my orders to Tyler and Danny in no uncertain terms. I believe we
were all on the same wavelength during my dissertation and that they actually caught
what I was laying down!
When we arrived at Karen’s, work was
not the first thing on my mind as I unloaded kids and basketballs from my car.
I wanted to play and remind the boys that adults can be like kids and have fun too.
We decided to play a short game of “pig” before I had to abandon them and get to
work. Then they would have to figure out how to have fun without me.
As I was pulling weeds, trimming
bushes and raking clippings and leaves, I heard the voices of kids playing
outside. You don’t hear that too often anymore. At that moment, I felt so good
about my decision to request bringing the boys with me. They had a little bit
of me and I got to have a little bit of them.
About an hour before I had finished,
the boys got the notion to bring out the bounce house to play in. With Karen’s
help, they got it pumped up and ready for business. Break time for Grandma!
Paying no attention to any weight limitation, I discarded my shoes and poured
myself into the bounce house with four jumping boys. Talk about agitation…but
this was the good kind. We stopped long enough for Karen to take our picture
and then continued with our “boyancy”.
All work and no play can make Mary a
dull girl…but not today.
